Upcycled Wall Shelf into a Peg Toy

When I bought this wall shelf at a garage sale for fifty cents it looked something like this (I actually forgot to take a before picture :-(
It took me a while to get around to transforming it into the toy I had in mind because (silly as this sounds) I had never used an electric drill before, and it kind of scared me!

Then I made the mistake of drilling before I had painted, and the holes shrunk a little when paint dripped inside.  My husband kindly redrilled the holes (not scared of the drill anymore- just don't like the noise!)
He also sawed a set of unsharpened pencils in half to use as the pegs.  The girls watched me work on it for a couple of days and were very eager to try it out.  After the holes were redrilled they had no trouble getting the pencils in and out.

I think it's going to work well as a quiet, somewhat educational toy for alone times.

(Curious to see the pencils come through from the underside)

Did you drill the holes all the way through the shelf, or just partway?  (Wondered about your comment about the pencils going all the way through . . . )

I can visuallize the gears turning in your head when you noticed the the wall shelf at the garage sale.
