If, on one of these rainy days, your kids are stuck inside and going a little stir-crazy, you might try encouraging them to write things in picture code to one another. My mother made this one a long time ago for a children's church class.
For practice decoding you could let them try the Bible verse worksheets I've included below.
(Of course, they might have even more fun making up their own codes, too)

My 9yr old loves to do this!
My best friend & my sister & I all wrote our own code like this when we were kids & we would write "secret" letters to each other. I don't know how, but somehow, we had it memorized. We could read & write without a decoder. What?!
