Today we tried a new activity to help her learn the alphabet. I filled a big bowl full of rice and gathered up some small foam letters I had bought at Walmart. One at a time, I placed a letter in the bowl on top of the rice and asked her to name it. Some of them she knew, and others, not. Then I buried the letter in the rice and said "The "m" (or whatever) is hiding. Can you find the "m?" She would then dig away until she caught sight of it, picked it up and we cheered.

Dig for Letters
Today we tried a new activity to help her learn the alphabet. I filled a big bowl full of rice and gathered up some small foam letters I had bought at Walmart. My daughter does this with her alphabet puzzle (and all her other puzzles). We hide the pieces in the rice, then she hunts for them and each time she finds a piece, she places it in the right spot of her puzzle (the wood kind of puzzles with knobs). When it is her alphabet puzzle, every time she finds a letter, I tell her its name and sound and a word that starts with that letter. She loves doing this. How old is your daughter?

ReplyDeleteGreat and cheap idea!
ReplyDeleteGood tactile activity for little ones! Rice, beans, sand, oats, pebbles...they're all fun to sift through! You could even do things of one color: a small yellow duck, yellow blocks, a small "ladyfinger" banana, etc., or several colors for older kids. What fun! Thanks for the idea!
